Historical Background
For a long time, that prayer was about the only thing that came to most Hungarians’ minds about Hungarian archery. It is no wonder—with the introduction of firearms in the 16th century, archery in Hungary disappeared almost completely. What was left were fragments of bones and some rusty arrowheads buried along with their owners’ bodies in the 10th century.
Yet still, it seems to be enough to reconstruct and revive this long-lost tradition. The traditional energy-storing recurve reflex bow is an amazing engineering advancement. Both the materials used and the shape of the bow make it much more efficient than the longbow or flatbow. Simply put, a recurve reflex shoots arrows faster at the same weight due to a superior speed-to-weight ratio.
The Hungarian Bowyers Today
Today in Hungary, the traditional bowmaking craftsmanship is still alive thanks to a handful of masters like Grozer, Toths, and Kovacs.
These masters reproduce the authentic recurve bows found in 10th-century graves by archaeologists in the 1920s. After understanding the design of the ancient Hungarian bow, these enthusiastic bowmakers started to build their own personal traditional bows—tools capable of incredible performance, such as the #50 bows used by world champions like Mónus József to shoot up to 400 meters.
