Choosing Your Bow
When buying a bow, you should consider five key factors: Expertise, Physique, Use, Budget, and Personal Taste.
- Expertise and Physique: Beginners or those who do not exercise specifically for archery should start with 25-35 lbs bows.
- Target Shooting: For repetitive practice, stay within the 25-35 lbs range to avoid muscle and joint strain.
- Hunting: A minimum of 45-50 lbs is recommended for effective use.
Note: Even physically strong individuals should not attempt a 70 lbs traditional recurve without extensive practice.
Maintenance and Care
Traditional bows require simple but disciplined care to ensure longevity:
- Bracing: Learn the proper technique. Watch video tutorial. For horn bows, see this special guide.
- Storage: Never leave a bow braced longer than necessary. Keep out of direct sunlight and heat.
- String Care: Use beeswax or specialized wax if the string appears thready. Ensure the string is not twisted when bracing.
- Safety: Never “dry fire” (release the string without an arrow).
Arrows and Equipment
| Requirement | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Selection | Arrows must be matched to your bow draw weight and draw length. |
| Material | High-quality Scots Pine or premium wood is recommended for traditional bows. |
| Target Use | Avoid hard surfaces or wood. Use professional targets or cardboard boxes filled with soft materials. |
| Safety | Always check for cracks or bends. Never shoot damaged arrows. |
